How to care for the necklaces?
How to care for the necklaces?

Santeria necklaces are acquired after a very elaborate ceremony, in which they are filled with energy and ashé by the godparents, and above all the blessing of all the saints.

Thus, you should learn how to take care of the collars or elekes, because thanks to them you will receive protection and guidance at all times.

It should be noted that the only ones who have the power to carry out this ceremony are the priests of osha, these should only be worn around our necks, and never in our pockets.

Having our necklaces entangled is considered totally disrespectful to the saint, and when they are not in use it is best to cover them with a white cloth.

On the other hand, we must remember that we cannot sleep with them, unless we are going through an illness and our sponsors tell us to do so.

If this is the case, it would be advisable to use only the Obbatala, which would be the one with white beads.

Learning how to attend to the necklaces or elekes is a very simple task, they are simple steps that we must follow with much respect and above all love towards our Orishas.

How to care for the necklaces or elekes?

If you are a beginner and want to learn the steps on how to care for elekes, here is what you will need and the best way to do it.

First of all, you should bear in mind that the collars should only be cared for once a year, and to do it properly you will need the following materials:

  • Honey
  • Coconut water
  • Husk
  • A deep earthenware bowl or dish
  • White absorbent cloth or cloth

In the clay dish you are going to add as much coconut water as possible, then add the husk and finally the honey; proceed to add all your Santeria necklaces one by one.

It is worth mentioning that you will have to leave your necklaces submerged in water for 24 hours, but why so long? This way your necklaces are energised and cleansed of any negative energy.

After 24 hours you will remove your necklaces one by one and dry them with the white cloth, after this process they can be used normally.

And that’s it! You will now have attended and know exactly how to attend to the necklaces or elekes, remember that the saints are watching your dedication and effort throughout this process.

For this reason, I advise you to be completely calm throughout this process, and not to have had sexual intercourse for at least one day before putting on your Santeria necklaces.

On the other hand, always remember to wear your necklaces at all times:

  • You go out on the street
  • During rituals or ceremonies

These should only be worn underneath your clothes, never as part of an outfit or to show off.

  • The necklaces are for personal use, which means that no one else may wear them, let alone touch them.
  • If you have already received the necklaces, you are part of the osha rule, so you must wear them in every ceremony or ritual.
  • After sex, you should bathe with water, brandy and cascarilla before using them again.
  • Before using your elekes, you should make sure that they are not tangled.
  • You must never undress with the collars on, let alone take a shower.
  • In your home you will have to place your necklaces in a safe place, no one should touch them; they should be laid out on a white cloth.
